The media markets pop culture through advertisements. Today, everyone is excessively exposed to media and is obsessed with learning about every movement of celebrities lives that these trends and behaviors which celebrities possess influence the way in which our society acts. Celebrities are icons which we look up to and inspire to be just like them. For example, I remember seeing high waste swimsuits in a store and thinking ‘YUCK! Who would ever want to buy that ugly swimsuit??’ but the second I saw Taylor Swift in a fashion magazine wearing a similar style swimsuit, I wanted one so bad. Pop culture can change and influence our thoughts and perspectives on something entirely.
It is not but obvious to admit that today’s generation is obsessed with social media. We crave knowing our ‘friends’ daily routine, newest haircut and even what foods they are eating at each meal.
Pop culture can affect us in a negative way. Today, most artists and movies are about abuse of drugs, alcohol and sex. Our favorite celebrities are seen not only in movies but in their day to day routine doing inappropriate things and we tend to think that since they are doing it, it is ok.
I believe that one of teenager’s main goal is to fit in to society and the ‘popular’ group at school. To do this, they turn to media and pop culture to access new trends and to see what is deemed as cool or not cool. Pop culture gives us these ideas through ‘hot or not’ lists or ‘what is in and out’ lists. Sometimes, these lists aren’t true but we still follow them. Pop culture always starts trends, ends trends and is the center of what’s cool or not. We feed off of pop culture especially with new and growing technology and social media. Pop culture is the center of demand, and when people hear of this demand, more people will want it, causing peer pressure and desire.
